Apple's current Operating System Mac OS X v.10.4 "Tiger" was launched on 29th
April 2005. This is the latest major release of the Mac Operating System from OS X 10.3 and includes over 200
new features, some of which are listed below. Tiger comes supplied with every new Apple computer and is available as
a boxed retail pack for upgraders. See details below for prices.
Tiger Key Features are:
Spotlight:
Find anything on your computer instantly with Spotlight, a new desktop
search engine completely integrated into Mac OS X. Spotlight quickly
searches everything on your personal computer-including documents,
images, movies, music, email, contacts, appointments, and system
preferences-and finds what you need with pinpoint accuracy.
Dashboard:
The Dashboard is a new view in Mac OS X that zooms on top of your
Desktop with a click of a function key and, like Exposé, disappears
just as quickly and easily. Dashboard displays timely information (e.g.
Stock quotes or current weather) and frequently used applications
features (eg. iTunes playback control or Address Book contact look up)
using small applications called widgets.
Mac OS X Tiger includes a selection of built in widgets and a rich developer environment to allow for dashboard extension.
Safari RSS:
Scan all the latest news, information and articles from thousands of
your favorite major news organizations, community web sites and
personal weblogs in one simple-to-read, searchable article list using
Safari RSS. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) news feeds allow major
organisations and individuals to easily publish to the web. Standard
protocols make it simple for applications to access and organise these
news feeds.
iChat AV:
Tiger iChat AV puts multi-way video and audio conferencing right on
your Desktop with new video technology that delivers significantly
better picture quality. Up to four people can see and hear each other
in real time and up to ten people can participate in an audio
conference. iChat AV in Mac OS X Tiger is powered by the new H.264
video codec in QuickTime to deliver quality images and increased
resolution.
Quick Time 7 & H.264 video codec:
Mac OS X Tiger includes H.264 which is the next generation, industry
standard video codec that is able to deliver DVD quality video at lower
data rates than was previously possible. H.264 video produces a sharper
image and makes background details appear clear by delivering a
dramatic reduction in compression artefacts. Mac OS X leverages the
power of the dual processor PowerMac to provide real time compression
performance.
Automator:
Automator is an innovative easy to use application that automates
simple, complex or repetitive tasks without requiring the user to write
scripts or have advanced technical expertise. To automate tasks, users
add "actions', that correspond to each step of the task, to an
Automator document called a 'workflow'. Once a workflow is constructed
it can be run from within the Automater application or be saved as a
document executed from an Action or Script menu. Workflows can be
shared with others.

· Macintosh computer with PowerPC G5, G4 or G3 processor
· DVD drive required for installation

· At least 256MB of RAM
